The EU could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it deems “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions were placed on figures that were central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
